Furious, the Darkling snaps all of the men in half, grabs an injured Luda and goes. It seems Luda and the Darkling have been training Grisha in secret, and the soldiers kill her on the spot. But, a soldier searches the house and finds Luda. He’s hoping to intimidate them, convince them that he is a god. He pretends to surrender, allowing the soldiers to shoot him with their arrows (guns, it seems, have not yet been invented) as Luda heals him from inside. They begin to pack up to go on the run, but soon the cabin is surrounded by soldiers. Hundreds of years in the past, Kirigan, then known as the Darkling, rides a horse through the woods, arriving at a secluded cabin.
